Keith Randell (Builder 2022)
Keith’s coaching career began in the same school he went to as a student. In the late 80’s Keith started as Physical Education teacher at Bishop white School in Port Rexton. Bishop White School underwent a renovation in 1990 that added a new gymnasium to the existing building and this jump started a volleyball program that rivalled all small schools at that time. Starting in 1991 Bishop White boy’s teams won 12 straight regional titles in A , AA and AAA categories . In that time frame Keith’s boy’s teams won 7 provincial titles and 6 NLVA titles. Like most small schools the senior teams were composed of players from grade 8 and up. From the mid 90’s to the early 2000’s Bishop White boys teams were competitive with the top teams in the province. The team turned heads in 1996 making it all the way to the Tier one championship match at Volleyfest against the defending 4-time 4A high school champions from Pasadena.
In 2004 Keith moved to Clarenville as Physical Education instructor at Clarenville Middle School which was a grade 4-8 school at the time. This is where the true building occurred. Keith built a program that was unprecedented in regard to giving students the opportunity to play the sport. Keith, along with the administration of the school implemented a “no cut” policy which meant every student who wanted to play volleyball, were put on a team. The numbers grew exponentially to the point where there were multiple teams per gender per grade. The number of participants was outgrowing the space resulting in the cafe space converting to a court every day to allow for teams to practice after school. The school teams grew from two in 2004 to a high of sixteen in 2012. A culture developed where not only did these teams compete, but they were very successful. Keith’s boy’s teams have won every major title from 13U to 18U on multiple occasions and on at least one occasion the Clarenville system ran the table winning every NLVA boy’s division from 13U to 18U in one year. At the senior high-level Keith’s teams have won the A, 2A , 3A and 4A boys title , 16U,17U and 18U title and Dalhousie Classic Tier 1 titles multiple times. On the national stage Keith has attended the Volleyball Canada or Eastern Canadian championships 8 times with his teams winning 3 silver and one gold in various divisions/tiers.
Keith has been a volleyball referee since 2005 and has officiated numerous tournaments and events from 13U-18U. All levels of High School volleyball, NLVA seniors, Eastern Elite and the local senior league. Keith has also put off referee clinics for new local officials in the Clarenville area. In 2017 Keith received his regional badge for refereeing volleyball.
Keith has been recognized for his contribution to the sport:
• NLVA Junior High Coach of the year – 3 times
• NLVA Senior High Coach of the year – 2 times
• NLVA Community Development Award – 3 times
• NLVA Reg Soper Award winner for dedication to the sport of volleyball

• John Drinkwater Memorial Award winner as Sport NL
• Provincial Coach of the Year for 2015
• The 2012 Leroy Miller sport builder award for the promotion of the sport of volleyball in Clarenville.
Keith has always said that he is most proud about building a program where every student has the opportunity to play and enjoy the sport of volleyball. From this growth a culture develops where players and teams learn from each other and develop a form of respect that unites students, schools, and the community. Keith continues to keep in touch with the sport as a consultant with some school teams and refereeing many tournaments each year provincially. Keith also referees and has helped organize the local men’s and women’s league in Clarenville for the past 10 years.
