Bruce Cocker
Bruce Cocker started playing volleyball in 1970 at Prince of Wales Collegiate and, after high school, continued to play at College of Trades and Technology ( now CNA) from 1972 to 1976.
After graduation he went on to play Senior A volleyball with the Venice Pizzeria team which won several Provincial and St John’s Molson Senior League Championships. In addition to playing, Bruce starting coaching volleyball in 1976 and continued through the eighties, coaching teams including College of Trades and Technology Women’s Team, HMCS Cabot Women’s Team, Kean Electric Women’s Team and others.
Bruce has been officiating volleyball since the mid seventies and has refereed at countless tournaments and championships in Newfoundland, Labrador, and Canada. He attained his National Officials Certification in 1993. He has officiated AUS games and numerous national tournaments all across Canada. He refereed at Canada Games in Kamloops, BC in 1993 and in Sherbrooke, Quebec in 2013.
Bruce was one of the original members of the NL Volleyball Board of Officials (now NL Volleyball Officials Association) and served as Regional Officials Chair from 1990 to 1994. He was actively involved on the NL Volleyball Association for many years conducting referee clinics all across Newfoundland and Labrador, preparing and updating the testing process, and compiling the Provincial Directory for referees of all levels.
In 1992-93, Bruce was the proud recipient of the Paul Augot Memorial Award for work and dedication in officiating. As a true “senior” official, he continues to referee today. For his dedication to the sport of volleyball and for his valuable contribution to the game, Bruce Cocker is nominated to the NL Volleyball Hall of Fame
