Guy Bradbury (Builder 2002)
Guy started his playing career at Bishop Field College and continued at Bishops College where, from 1968-70 he was a member of a Junior St John’s Championship team, a Senior St. John’s Championship Team and a Provincial Championship Team. In 1970-71 he was a member of the Newfoundland Canada Games Team but injured his thumb and could not play. This was to be the turning point for Guy. Although he would continue to play with various club teams, Memorial Varsity in1973-4, and the legendary Razorbacks, he started to officiate and it was as an official that he would make his mark on Volleyball!
The milestones in Guy’s officiating are as follows: 1971-Provincial Rating, 1974-Regional Rating, 1980-National Rating and 1983-awarded International Referee by Federation International de Volleyball. In 2000, he was nominated as a referee in the World League of Volleyball. This is a 6 week inter-continental League featuring 16 Teams.
On the Provincial level, Guy was involved until 1995, when he moved to Ontario to take on the title of General Manager/Chief Operating Officer—The Sport Alliance of Ontario. His work as a Clinician/Evaluator started in 1974 and he became the Regional Officials Chairman, 1975-1979. He was then elected Vice-President of the Provincial Volleyball Association, 1979-81 and served as President from 1985-1987.
Guy was a member of numerous Organizing committees over the years. Some of them include the International Match between Canada and the USA in 1982; Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee-Canada vs Cuba, 1984, and Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee- Canada vs Korea, 1986. He also served as a member of the Molson Cup Executive Committee and a number of Organizing Committees- Canadian Volleyball Association National Championships.
On the National Level he has officiated at too many CIAU (now CIS) Championships to count since his first assignment in
Moncton in 1978. His latest CIS work was at the Men’s Championships in Edmonton, 2002. Over the course of his career, he has been either First or Second Referee in aproxamately 13 Gold Medal Matches.
Guy’s work with Volleyball Canada has also been very impressive! He served on the Board of Directors; 1979-1981 and again ; 1984-1985. He has been the First Referee for the Gold Medal Matches, male and female, from Juvenile to Senior National Championship. As far as can be determined, Guy is the only person to have accomplished this feat!
He is a member of the International Officials Committee as well as being a Clinician/Evaluator for the National Promotions Program and was assigned to work both the 1979 Canada Games in Brandon and the 2001 Canada Games in London.
On the International Level Guy has had a stellar career. He has worked the World Student Games in Edmonton-1983, Kobe, Japan-1985, and Sicily, Italy-1997. He did the Team Canada Women’s Tour in Holland, Germany in 1984 and in Peru in 1987. Also in 1987 he went to Havana, Cuba to referee the NORCECA Zone Olympic Qualifying Tournament. 1989-Canada Cup-Women’s-Toronto, Ontario; 1990-America’s Cup-Men-Buenos Aires, Argentina; 1993-NORCECA Zone Championships-New Orleans, USA; 1993-Federation of International Volleyball World Championships Qualifying Tournament-Tunis, Tunisia; 1995 had to turn down an invitation to World Student Games due to new employment. In 1998 he was off again, this time to Argentina to work at the America’s Cup-Men- and the next year, 1999 he did the same tournament in the USA. The year 2000 found Guy in the USA again, Refereeing at the Olympic Qualifying –Women and then he went to Cuba to referee at the World League of Volleyball-Men. In the year 2001, he did 3 assignments-World League of Volleyball-Men-USA and Brazil.
